Montana Marshall is the founder of The Dress Change – a modern-day solution to the fast-fashion problem. The platform allows you to upload the styles you no longer need, and bid on another user’s item as an exchange. Montana’s goal? To make The Dress Change a responsible solution to online shopping for UK women. Here, she shares more:
What inspired you to launch The Dress Change?
“The Dress Change was created to help women save money on their wardrobes. With the rising concern of fast fashion, it feels like the perfect time. Every woman I know has items in their wardrobe that either fits poorly, doesn’t suit them, or they’ve forgotten to return. Whatever the case, there’s plenty opportunity for us all to get new or hardly worn styles we want, in exchange of items we no longer want.
Shopping is fun and can be a stress reliever; who doesn’t like shiny new things? But there are drawbacks of this fast fashion culture. The balance between what we need and what we want will always be off-centred, it’s human nature. The Dress Change aims to help correct this within the fashion industry.”
When was the idea first conceived?
“In 2017. I hosted a weekly girls’ night where we’d get together over good food and cocktails, and talk into the night. One of these sessions lead to us wanting to try a new bar in the area. But there was one setback: nobody liked what they were wearing. We rifled through my wardrobe and began swapping pieces between each other until everyone was happy and suitably dressed for our impromptu night out. I watched this all taking place and the idea was born.”
What has been the most memorable swap to date?
“We have a world of lovely items uploaded to our website each week. We once had a member upload an Armani suit that was never worn, it was up there for just under two hours, and then it was swapped! It caused an absolute frenzy as there were hundreds of bids for it!”
