PRINCE OF PECKHAM
Describing itself as ‘a pub for South London, by South London', Prince of Peckham is the brainchild of owner Clement Ogbonnaya. He explains to me why he opened a pub in Peckham, and why it’s so dear to him:
“I grew up in South East London having gone to a local school, St Thomas Apostle in Peckham. Peckham was where I spent my formative years and made friendships that still exist til today. Most importantly, Peckham was the home one of my favourite TV show, Desmond's. It was the one show on TV that my family and I resonated with, as we were all Nigerian born having moved to London in the 80's. I really love where Peckham is today being recognised as one of the coolest places to live in the world, but I'm a great believer of acknowledging and celebrating the journey that Peckham and its residents have gone through.
Prince of Peckham was about creating a space where old and new Peckham could co-exist, regardless of colour, class and sexual orientation. A celebration of the cultural melting pot that Peckham is. It's that home from home for everyone that visits us.”
Here you can expect a cosy setting to celebrate anything from birthdays, to (hopefully) winning its ‘University of Peckham’ pub quiz, and specially hosted lunches held on occasions such as Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. If you’re planning a more intimate affair you can also hire the pub’s private room – which also serves as space for its mid-week dance class events.
You'll also find a range of dishes by White Men Can’t Jerk. Yes, that’s the name. And yes, they really can. I recommend the mac n chilli cheese with their jerk chicken dish. That pineapple and scotch bonnet jam? Game changer.
But don’t just take my world for it. In the words of the guvna’ Clement himself: welcome to Peckham!
